June 1, 2024 | AYR is a proud sponsor of the 1990 Institute‘s second 2024 teachers workshop, “U.S.-China Relations: Untangling Campaign Rhetoric & Understanding Policy”! This workshop is designed to meet the needs of middle and high school educators who wish to deepen their understanding of US-China relations, distinguish between political rhetoric and actual policies, and integrate this knowledge into their teaching. Attendees will enhance their ability to promote critical thinking, understand policy implications, expand their knowledge of U.S.-China relations, and build media literacy. The workshop is open to middle and high school teachers, as well as all lifelong learners. This is an important subject not only during the election cycle but also to understand from a global perspective.

Participate in Chinese American Resilience Study
May 31, 2024 | A UC Berkeley graduate student is contributing to the Chinese American Resilience Study. Broadly, the goal is to provide schools and communities with information about the unique challenges and needs of Chinese American adolescents. Those who participate can get a $15 Amazon gift card for the survey and an additional $30 Amazon gift card if selected for the interview.
CA vs Hate’s 1st Anniversary
May 25, 2024 | Speak up for your friends, classmates and yourself by reporting hate. Call 833-8-NO-HATE to report or visit CAvsHate.org. We’re stronger together. CAvsHate.org is California’s first statewide reporting hotline for victims of hate incidents and crimes. AAPI Youth Rising provided feedback throughout the year to the California Civil Rights Department as a community partner organization.
Act to Change’s 6th Annual Day Against Bullying

AAPI Youth Rising’s Legislative Committee Lead Matthew Sugiyama joined the panel alongside amazing youth leaders. White House AANHPI celebration 2024
May 22, 2024 | Earlier this week, the White House and the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) organized a big celebration of AANHPI heritage month and the 25th anniversary of the establishment of WHIAANHPI. There were leaders from five presidential administrations coming together to commemorate this milestone and reflect on the progress made by AANHPI communities over the past quarter-century. We’re honored to be included in the White House’s 2024 AANHPI celebration! You can stream the entire program here.

May 20, 2024 | Max and Mina attended the White House AANHPI regional pot-luck on May 13th. The network had representatives from the following groups: AAPI Youth Rising; Bayanihan Community Center; Bishop (Bill Sorro Housing Program); Canon Kip Senior Center; the City of Fremont; HomeKey PH; Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA-APA Advocates); Pacific Community Development; Philippine Consulate General; Sage Strategies; SALT; and SFCAUSE. We also got to meet the co-leads for the White House Initiative on AANHPI for Region 9 Nor Cal.
Zi Qing teaches One Day of AAPI History at NEST+M
May 20, 2024 | Our chapter leader Zi Qing Li taught our lesson plan for NEST+M’s (New Explorations into Science, Technology and Math) cultural exploration day with her friends Emee (in the qipao) and Misaki (in the kimono with the bun). She said, “Although presenting was nerve-wracking, it was incredibly rewarding to share AAPI’s remarkable history and its lesser-known truths. Initially, not many people knew the answers to the questions posed, but after the lesson, I believe many were able to take something valuable away. Thank you, it was an honor to contribute to such an important mission.” Thank you Zi Qing!
Hana teaches One Day of AAPI History at Carroll Senior High School
May 20, 2024 | Earlier this week, Chapter Leader Hana Parker brought our lesson plan to her history class at Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas. Hana said, “Teaching the One Day of AAPI History lesson provided me the opportunity to amplify AAPI voices and stories in an engaging and interactive way and also deepened my own understanding of AAPI history. It was an incredibly rewarding experience that served as a great reminder of the significance of inclusivity and representation in education.”

May 16, 2024 | As part of California’s coordinated response to a nationwide increase in hate, AAPI Youth Rising joins the California Civil Rights Department (CRD), alongside state and community partners, to gather and reveal new data highlighting the impact of California vs Hate in its first year of operation and announce new and ongoing initiatives to combat hate across the state. Officially launched a year ago this month by Governor Newsom, CA vs Hate is the state’s first-ever multilingual statewide hotline and online portal that provides a safe, anonymous reporting option for victims and witnesses of hate acts. CA vs Hate is one key piece of a statewide coordinated and strategic response to directly address hate in California, which in recent years reached its highest reported levels since 2001—increasing more than 20% from 2021 to 2022.
Sophanya Presents AYR’s Lesson and Patsy Mink
May 5, 2024 | In honor of election season 2024, Sophanya Long (Sonoma Chapter leader) shared AYR’s One Day of AAPI History lesson and hero Patsy Mink. Patsy Mink was the first woman of color elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and the first Asian-American woman to serve in Congress. She was an American attorney and politician from the U.S. state of Hawaii. She served in the United States House of Representatives for 24 years as a member of the Democratic Party, initially from 1965 to 1977, and again from 1990 until 2002.
