On February 21, community members gathered at the San Francisco Library’s Koret Auditorium for a powerful afternoon of film, dialogue, and collective reflection.
Making Waves traces the rise of Asian American activism, highlighting student organizers and community leaders who fought to establish Ethnic Studies as a way to confront systemic racism and invisibility. The film connects historical movements to today’s struggles and it was especially powerful to watch the documentary in a room full of educators, families, elders, and youth.
Following the screening, director Jon Osaki moderated a powerful panel discussion with co-director Josh Chuck and our AYR board members of (Mina, Ethan, Taryn, and David). The panel covered a vast array of topics and questions, from personal experiences with identity to how young people foster advocacy today. Audience members were excited to contribute questions and comments and continue with the meaningful dialogue.
After the program concluded, attendees lingered in the lobby to speak with Jon, Josh, and AYR. We shared information about our ONE DAY OF AAPI HISTORY initiative, inviting community members to bring AAPI history lessons into classrooms and organizations.
Deep thanks to the library staff, especially Jen and Jerry, for their thoughtful coordination, and to the filmmakers and AYR members who shared their stories so generously.
If you missed this screening, we encourage you to follow Jon and Josh for future dates and projects!
