The recent move by the Trump administration to eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs across federal agencies is an alarming setback for marginalized communities. For AAPI communities specifically, DEI has been a vital part in addressing challenges they have perpetually faced, allowing for increased representation and empowering efforts to combat anti-Asian racism. Thus, dismantling these programs could significantly exacerbate AAPI inequalities.
Additionally, these DEI programs provided essential training and awareness initiatives in education, helping to reduce bias and increase understanding of the complexities within AAPI communities. Without these programs, AAPI youth are at risk of further marginalization.
AAPI Youth Rising is deeply committed to ensuring that the voices of AAPI youth are heard. Though these recent changes are, for many AAPI communities and DEI advocates, frustrating and discouraging, they also allow for reflection; they can serve as a reminder that, even in the face of setbacks, the power of community and the fight for fairness will persist.
