On October 16, 2024, Taryn and Johann presented at the third annual Equity in Mental Health Symposium at the College of Marin. They shared about AAPI Youth Rising’s history, goals and accomplishments, including our advocacy in the realm of mental health. They then led a workshop in which participants broke up into smaller groups to discuss the meaning of community and explore aspects of culture and identity that can sometimes become a barrier to seeking out mental health support.
We are thankful for the many powerful stories and insightful comments that were shared. Many highlighted the need for more culturally-tailored mental health resources and practitioners, especially therapists able to serve all minority groups. Participants also brought up how generational differences, specifically in AANPHI communities, can make accessing and understanding the importance of mental health more challenging.
Special thanks to the College of Marin for hosting such an amazing and inspiring conference!
